What ancient wisdom is activated when artists come together across time and space in a work that asks its readers to consider “the speed at which our electrons rush to reach each other” in relation to the deep time of the redwood forest?
The poem at the heart of The Voice of the Fox is addressed to Diego de Landa, the 16th-century Spanish Franciscan friar who attempted to eradicate the Maya civilization through the burning of invaluable codices containing knowledge of Maya religious, spiritual, and cultural life.
This limited-edition artists’ book draws on the Dresden Codex, one of just four surviving Maya codices, for its accordion-fold structure, scale, proportions, and page design in which red outlines delineate sacred space.
The Voice of the Fox seeks to imbue the reader with a cohesive forest-centered experience. The book reflects the enduring resilience of the natural world as well as the rebellious resistance to colonization, as it wrestles with the passage and scale of time itself.
